Conveying the spirit of what is seen and felt
is the passion of the sumi-e artist. The world is alive, and Karen conveys life's inner and outer beauty through natural materials:
pine soot ink, rice paper, bamboo brush and grinding stone, and her unique adaptation of the basic Chinese sumi-e painting
techniques.
The 'Rivers' series was done in response to the flood
that devastated my city of Cedar Rapids, IA this past summer.
